With Summer fast approaching and May bringing the longer and brighter days, those Summer feel good tracks are really starting to flow in (I’m looking at you, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber & Martin Garrix!) and it’s only beginning!
Breakthrough
Fontaines D.C.
To kick off the May edition of my playlist, I want to rewind a little back to May, 1st, where Dublin based rock band, Fontaines D.C, made their way to America in order to perform two of their songs on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
I, like a lot of people, knew of Fontaines D.C, but I couldn’t say I was a straight up fan because I didn’t know very much about their music, but I am sure I heard their song ‘Boys In The Better Land’ on the radio before and I knew it caught my attention, as it should!
However, there has been a lot of chatter here on Irish soil about the Irish media not getting behind Fontaines D.C enough and I would have to agree. If they were better promoted, I am sure I would have been a fan a long time ago, and there is no doubt that if they were the likes of ‘Picture This’ (no shade thrown to the lads, I am a fan!) their Jimmy Fallon appearance would have gathered way more traction over here, which is funny, because – in my opinion – a certain Irish radio station played a crucial part in promoting and getting Picture This to where they are today.
Fontaines D.C smashed it though, and it looks like they didn’t even need the help of Irish media. On the back of their Jimmy Fallon performances, I can now proudly say I am a fan and have been streaming their music ever since.
As I scrolled through the comments section under the video of their ‘The Boys In The Better Land’ performance, I came across a comment that read “Rock and Roll is alive and it in lives in Ireland” That is does!
Singles
Aimée – Don’t Bother
Another Irish artist who is currently shining bright is Aimée Fitzpatrick, which is why I had to include Aimée’s single ‘Don’t Bother’ in my latest playlist. I have been hooked on her voice since I first heard the song being played on radio. She’s incredibly talented and it’s great to have a pop star of her calibre coming from our emerald isle!
Ed Sheeran with Justin Bieber – I Don’t Care
Summer is set to be a good time for Ed Sheeran as he gears up to release an EP of what’s bound to be full of star-studded collaborations on July 12th. The first of those collaborations titled ‘I Don’t Care’ with none other than Mr.Justin Bieber was released this month and it’s an absolute BOP.
Summer Days – Martin Garrix feat. Macklemore & Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy
Okay, technically this one was released as April came to a close, but I only happened to come across it this month and in my opinion, it’s the first real Summer track to be released this year. The proof was probably already in the title but the feel good vibes are strong in this one!
EP
She Is Coming – Miley Cyrus
Just released today, Miley Cyrus’ new EP is hot off the press. In probably what is her most honest musical offering to date, Miley is said to explore her past self, opening up about topics such as partying, past drug use and the love and freedom she now feels has made a difference in her life. There’s a parental advisory label on this EP for a reason, but I’m into it. The lyrics are raw and honest, and as refreshingly unapologetic as we have come to expect from Miley.
My favourite tracks are
- Unholy – Miley’s clapback response to those critical of her openness on substance use (I’m not condoning drug use, kids. You just can’t deny this is a cleverly written, undeniably catchy, tongue in cheek tune)
- Party Up The Street – It speaks for itself really, it’s the EP’s major party track.
- The Most – Presumably about her husband Liam Hemsworth, Miley sings about the unconditional love she is shown during her highs and lows in life.
This is May…
What songs have you been loving for the month of May?
