Blogmas Day 8 – Favourite Christmas Adverts

What are the signs of Christmas for you? Is it buying the advent calendars, noticing the twinkling of the Christmas lights in your town, or tucking into your first selection box of the year? For me, the real signs of the festive season rolling around are the Christmas ads popping up on TV. Whether you notice it or not, it wouldn’t quite be Christmas without them and for some, are even the real indicator for putting up the Christmas tree!

With that in mind, I decided Day 8 of my Blogmas should belong to the highly coveted Christmas TV advert.

The Classics

I couldn’t but start with the classic ads, the oldies but goodies that last the test of time. These are the three classic TV ads that I love seeing, the ones that make me go “It’s Christmas”

Kellogg’s Cornflakes (1991)

This ad may be 5 years older than I am, but it’s one I always took stock of as a child and for many kids growing up throughout the years, it gave them a glimpse of real magic. There she was again, the little girl who did the impossible, set the ‘trap’ we all did for Santa over the years, but caught him and even had a few of his cornflakes! It’s a gorgeous little piece of television that was so well made, it would make the most grown-up of adults believe 😉

Coca-Cola (1995)

“Holidays are coming, Holidays are coming…” Need I say more? This ad is so iconic and deep rooted in our memories that, three years ago, I waited in wind and rain for 2-3 hours to get a picture taken with the tour trucks that do the rounds of Ireland and the UK and I still don’t regret it one bit. Obsessed!

Guinness (2004)

Now, I’m aware this might be the most Irish thing ever, but this particular advert has been Christmas to me for as long as I can remember! It’s begins at Christmas Eve, the snow starts to fall and the scene is everything you’d imagine Christmas to be. Just watch the magic unfold!

John Lewis #BearandHare (2013)

Hearing Lily Allen’s cover of ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ might be what attracted me to this advert at first but the illustration and message behind it is what really made me stay.

John Lewis #ManOnTheMoon (2015)

John Lewis are pretty good at hitting you right in the feels and this advert was a real tear jerker! As with the message, a community might as well be half a world away for some of our elderly friends and the thought of that breaks my heart. This ad makes you want to get out there and check in on your elderly neighbours and relatives and give them the time and attention they deserve!

Aldi Kevin The Carrot Cliff Hanger (2018)

We all know of the famous Kevin Carrot by now, but Aldi’s advertising tactics were especially clever with this one. I even mistook it at first for the famous ad they gained inspiration from.

Dunnes Stores (2018)

I adore this ad so much, I didn’t think such a new Christmas ad could come along and steal my heart but it did!

  1. Okay this is such a good blog post idea! It was especially interesting to me since I’m pretty sure we don’t have the same ads in the US. Seriously the cutest, I love it!
